Fruit description: Tangerine Hansen Fruit are a bright orange colour, with a smooth slightly pocked skin. They are 9cm in diameter with a slightly flattened shape like a mandarin. The flesh is very juicy with a few seeds. They are sweeter than oranges. The flavour is like a very sweet mandarin, just like “Fanta”!
Flowers: The flowers are 2cm in diameter, fragrant, waxy, white, with 4 petals in a star shape, they are produced in Spring.
Growing conditions: The Tangerine tree is evergreen and has long pointed glossy green leaves. It grows to 2 metres high and can be grown in a pot. The Tangerine tree likes full sun and require rich, well-drained soil and can tolerate frosts. Plenty of water is required for big juicy fruit and plant health. Pruning is not required. Fertilise the tree in Winter and in late Summer with loves chicken manure or citrus fertiliser. Mulch around the tree but do not let it touch the stem or it can cause rot.
Uses: Tangerines can be eaten fresh, or to make a refreshing delicious sweet juice. Put a Tangerine in your children’s lunchbox, as they are easy to peel and eat at school. Use the segments, juice or grated rind as you would with mandarins. The dried Tangerine peel is used in Chinese Sichuan cooking.
