Fruit description: Very fragrant citrus fruit, with very thick pith and almost no flesh or juice. The large quantity of pith causes the fruit to have the shape of fingers. The citron fruit is green when unripe and dark yellow when ripe. The citron does not fall off the tree and can reach 4–5 kg if not picked before fully mature. These large fruits can break the branches of the tree.
Flowers: The unisexual flowers occur on the tree all year.
Growing conditions: Frost sensitive. The citron tree prefers well drained soil and full sun. It likes citrus food in Spring. It is a fast growing small tree, growing from 2-5 metres tall.
Uses: The citron fruit is very fragrant. Pith can be candied or made into jam. Skin and pith can be made into Indian pickles. It has high soluble fibre. Use zest (outer skin) as a flavouring in cooking. The leaves also have a lovely citrus fragrance and are said to repel moths so are useful to protect clothing.
Medicinal uses: Citron was one of the first forms of citrus fruit used by people. In ancient times, the citron was used for medical uses such as a remedy for seasickness, for treating lung and intestinal disorders. The essential oil of the zest was taken with wine as an antidote to poison.
