Fruit description: The fruit is produced on new wood in Spring to Autumn. Brown Turkey fruit are about 85 mm long. They are green with a light purple blush when ripe, red inside. When ready to eat the fig is slightly soft. You may get two crops of figs a year. The flesh is sugary sweet and rich.
Flowers: On all Figs, the flower is hidden inside the fruit.
Growing conditions: The fig is very easy to grow, tolerating a wide range of climates. It likes plenty of water to its roots in hot weather. Brown Turkey Fig is a deciduous tree, growing 4-5 metres in height. It grows well in pots as well as in the ground. It has large leaves with three small lobes. It can tolerate cold but not late frosts when the leaves are new. It can tolerate slightly alkaline soil and slight salinity. Prune the tree to a single trunk so you can pick the fruit easily.
Uses: Figs are delicious fresh, as a dessert, poached, made into jam (great with ginger in it), baked or grilled, or glaced. They are very rich in calcium and dietary fibre, and a good source of minerals and antioxidants as well as other nutrients.
Medicinal uses: Figs, fresh or dried, are a useful food to relieve constipation.
Pollination requirements: Self-Pollinating.
Harvest time Figs are ready to pick and eat in Summer and Autumn. Wear gloves as the white sap in the fruit stem can irritate the skin.
