Growing conditions: The fig is very easy to grow, tolerating a wide range of climates. It likes plenty of water to its roots in hot weather. DWARF Black Genoa is a deciduous tree, growing to 2.5 metres in height. It grows well in pots as well as in the ground. It has large leaves with three or five lobes. It can tolerate cold but not late frosts when the leaves are new. It can tolerate slightly alkaline soil and slight salinity. Prune the tree to a single trunk so you can pick the fruit easily.
Uses: Figs are delicious fresh, as a dessert, poached, made into jam (great with ginger in it), baked or grilled, or glaced. They are very rich in calcium and dietary fibre, and a good source of minerals and antioxidants as well as other nutrients.
Medicinal uses: Figs, fresh or dried, are a useful food to relieve constipation.
Pollination requirements: Self-Pollinating.
Harvest time Figs are ready to pick and eat in Summer and Autumn. Wear gloves as the white sap in the fruit stem irritates the skin.
