Plant origin: Sandpaper Fig occurs naturally along gullies, creeks and rivers in rainforest and forest all along the eastern coast of Australia as far north as coastal central Queensland.
Fruit description: The figs are small, brown and hairy, growing on the trunk and main branches. They are very tender and nice to eat, stuffed full of tiny soft edible seeds, like a common garden fig. You might prefer to split it open and eat the seeds if you find the skin too furry!

Growing conditions: The dense shady tree grows to about 8 metres. It has dark green leaves about 120 mm long, 50 mm wide, very rough, like sandpaper on the upper surface. It likes a shady position, well-drained soil.
Uses: Eat the fruit fresh or cook it as you would commercial figs, jams, dried, stewed.

Harvest time Pick the figs when they are dark in colour and not hard. The fruit falls on the ground when it is ripe.
