Fruit description: The fruit occurs like grapes, in long hanging clusters of 10mm “cherries” each with jelly like flesh around a small inedible seed. They are white at first, then as they ripen, they turn red then black. Each bunch has fruit at different stages of ripeness and the multi-coloured bunches look fantastic.
Flowers: The flowers are tiny and occur in long hanging bunches.
Growing conditions: This dense little shrub grows to 2.5 metres. It tolerates frost. It also grows well in a pot.
Uses: The fruit makes excellent jam, wine and sauce. It can also be eaten fresh.
Medicinal uses:
Pollination requirements: Sometimes Self-Pollinating, sometimes Male and Female flowers occur on separate trees, but a female tree will produce good fruit without a nearby male.
Harvest time Pick and eat the black cherries in summer.
Plant relatives
Special features: Some people find the fruit tart, others find it sweet. This perception is a genetic characteristic.
