Fruit description: Jaboticabas are shiny black cherries which grow directly on the stems of the tree. Each fruit is about 30 mm in diameter. They are delicious, sweet and juicy. The thin skin is a bit astringent. The pulp inside is white and the texture and flavour are like that of a grape. There is one seed inside.
Flowers: The Jaboticaba plant will produce flowers 3 or 4 times a year if well irrigated, followed by fruit. The flowers are small white-yellow, and unusual because they emerge directly from the trunk and branches of the shrub.
Growing conditions: The Jaboticaba is a slow growing large shrub that can reach 5 metres in height. The foliage is dense so it makes an excellent hedge. Pruning it to shape will not affect the amount of fruit you get. The Jaboticaba likes plenty of water to produce plenty of big fruit. It likes a subtropical climate but can tolerate some frost, protect young plants from frost. It likes full sun or part shade. The best soil for this plant is well drained, deep and well fertilised, slightly acid soil. The plant has attractive pinkish new leaves.
Uses: Eat the fruit fresh or make delicious jelly, juice or wine. The fruit begins to ferment a week after picking. Jaboticaba can be frozen whole, they can be eaten frozen.
Medicinal uses: Jaboticaba fruit is very rich in antioxidants.

Harvest time You can get several crops a year. The main crops are in April and October. The flowers often appear after heavy rains. Fruit is ready 4 weeks after flowering. Pick the fruit when it is dark purple-black.
