Fruit description: Lakoocha fruit is irregularly shaped, 10 to 15cm in diameter, with fuzzy skin. It is dull yellow with a faint pink blush when ripe. The pulp is sweet in taste. There are some small seeds in each fruit.
Flowers: The male flowers are orange, the female flowers are red and both occur on the same tree.
Growing conditions: The Lakoocha is a tropical or subtropical deciduous tree, which can grow up to 7 metres in height. The leaves are large and tough.
Uses: You can eat Lakoocha fresh, use it in Indian curry, or preserve it in chutney.
Medicinal uses: The fruit is traditionally used as a liver tonic. The bark can be used to treat skin diseases.
Pollination requirements: Self-Pollinating. The male flowers are orange, the female flowers are red and both occur on the same tree.
Harvest time Harvest Lakoocha fruit in Autumn when completely ripe. The fruit can ripen at room temperature in a couple of days.
Plant relatives Lakoocha is related to Jackfruit, Kwai Muk, Breadfruit, Chempedak, Marang and Tarap which are all edible fruits.
Special features: Lakoocha timber is colorful and very good for cabinet making.
