Fruit description: The Haew Longan fruit is large, late season, and very sweet. The Longan fruit hangs in clusters. When ripe the fruit has a dull yellow, thin shell-like skin - easy to remove by hand. The fruit when peeled looks like an eyeball hence the name Dragon's Eye. Each fruit is about 30 mm in diameter. It contains a small shiny round hard inedible seed. The white semi-transparent flesh is very sweet, very juicy and quite delicious. The flavour is similar to a lychee but musky. The aroma is sweet and pleasant.
Flowers: The flowers are small and yellow, produced in erect clusters with male and female flowers occurring together. There are more flowers produced after a cool Winter than after a warm Winter.
Growing conditions: The DWARF Haew Longan is a very handsome bushy evergreen tree, with silvery leaves. It can grow to a height of 2.5 metres. It is moderately frost tolerant. It has large leaves, approximately 20cm long and 5cm wide. New growth is a pretty crimson. It makes an excellent shade tree. It likes a rich sandy loam which is well-drained. Give it plenty of water.
Uses: Eat the fruit fresh, in fruit salad or added to a vegetable salad or stir fry. Store the fruit in the refrigerator, or for a couple of days at room temperature. Longans can be frozen. Dried longan is used in Chinese cooking.
Medicinal uses: In Chinese medicine, the Longan is used to relax you or to relieve stress, help your immune system and give you strength and energy.
