Fruit description: The fruit of the Nagasaki Wase variety of Loquat ripen in Winter to Spring. They are oval, deep yellow or orange coloured, and may have a pink blush. The fruit size is like a plum, about 40 mm in diameter. The velvety skin is thin and edible. Each fruit contains 1-2 large brown inedible seeds. The flesh may be orange or white, with a texture like apples. The flavour is slightly acid, and tasty, reminding you of a mixture of other fruits.
Flowers: The flowers are cream coloured and fragrant, produced in clusters in Autumn.
Growing conditions: The Nagasaki Wase variety of Loquat is an evergreen tree that grows to a height of 2.5 metres. It is a hardy plant, resistant to frost, wind and to dry conditions once established. It has leathery, dark green glossy leaves that can be up to 30cm long. It is very easy to grow in most well drained soils. Loquats like full sunshine, they grow in subtropical, temperate to cool climates. It makes a good shade tree or specimen tree.
Uses: Eat loquats fresh, stewed or make into jam. Loquats have a high pectin content so is useful for making jams containing other fruits to help the jam set. Loquats are also good in pickles and chutney. Loquats are rich in vitamin A and dietary fibre. Loquats are used in Asian, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cooking.
