Plant origin: Coastal Northern NSW and South East Queensland.
Fruit description: The berries are oval, white speckled with blue so they appear mauve from a distance. They have thin soft skin, a delicious very sweet flavour, pleasant aroma, a few tiny edible seeds. The berries occur all over the bush. They attract birds.
Flowers: The flowers are small, pretty, white, star-shaped, with fluffy white stamens. The flowers appear scattered over the shrub in Spring and Summer in warm areas, or late Summer to Autumn in cooler Southern climates.
Growing conditions: Midyim berry is an evergreen spreading shrub, with small leaves. It grows to about 1.5 metres tall, easy to grow in a pot. It likes well-drained sandy soil full or part sun, moist coastal climate, temperate or subtropical. It can be grown as a low spreading hedge, ground cover or trailing over a rockery or wall. New growth is a pretty pink. In cold weather, the leaves may turn reddish. It tolerates frost but would need protection from severe frost, perhaps with taller plants over it.
Uses: Eat the fruit straight off the bush.
