Fruit description: Black Mulberries are a berry fruit. They are produced in large numbers. The Black Mulberry turns from green to red to black when ripe. Each fruit is about 2-4 cm long. Ripe fruit is very soft, aromatic, and strongly flavoured. Kids love them!
Flowers: The flowers are pale and tiny in long furry bunches.
Growing conditions: The Black Mulberry is a handsome deciduous spreading tree. It can be trained to an ornamental standard shape. The leaves are dark green, lobed, and can be as big as your hand. The tree provides good shade. It grows rapidly up to 6 metres tall. Plant the tree in well-drained soil, in a sunny position. These trees are tolerant of a wide range of temperatures and moisture conditions and are frost tolerant. Mulch the tree and feed it during the growing season. Pruning in winter or after fruiting encourages more fruit to be produced.
Uses: Black Mulberries are delicious! Eat them fresh, stewed, in pies and crumbles, with cream or ice-cream. They make delicious jam and jelly, ice-cream, wine and liqueur.
