Fruit description:
Flowers: The flowers are tiny, white, appearing on the tips of the branches in Summer.
Growing conditions: Oregano is an evergreen prostrate herb, which grows to about 30cm tall. It grows easily and spreads. The leaves are soft and mid green in colour, about 2cm long. It likes a warm or temperate climate, tolerates frost and likes hot dry summers and cold wet winters. Grow your oregano in light well-drained soil, in full sun. It doesn't need feeding! It grows well in a pot. You can prune it hard when it dies back in Winter.
Uses: Oregano is a savoury herb, often used with sage and thyme. It is an ingredient of the Middle Eastern herb mixture Zatar. Oregano goes well in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean foods, especially with lamb, poultry, eggs, vegetables, soups, marinades, on pizzas. Oregano is very similar in aroma and flavour to marjoram, but oregano is stronger.
Medicinal uses:
Pollination requirements: Self-Pollinating.
Harvest time Pick the leaves any time you wish to use them. You can dry the leaves; for drying pick the stems when flowering in late Summer, hang them upside down to dry. Store in an airtight jar.
