Flowers: Pandan rarely flowers.
Growing conditions: Pandan is a low growing plant with long bright green leaves growing in fan shaped bunches. Pandan produces new shoots at the base, so it grows as a clumping plant to1 metre high. It has woody aerial roots. It is a handsome plant in tropical and subtropical gardens. It doesn't need water in winter but likes full sun and water in Summer. Pandan can be grown in pots in sunny positions protected from cold winds.
Uses: Pandan leaves are used for Asian cooking, especially with rice as it gives a lovely nutty flavour and aroma. Pandan leaves are one of the ingredients to make Black rice pudding. They are used to flavour and give a pale green colour to savoury dishes and desserts. The leaves are either crushed or boiled to obtain the flavour and the colour. The leaves can be used singly or woven into a basket to wrap rice or chicken for steaming or frying. The bundle then has a neat wrapper for Asian style picnic foods.
