Description
Non-Astringent Persimmons can be eaten when the fruit is still hard, only half-coloured, half-ripe, crunchy like an apple, OR when the fruit is bright orange, soft and fully ripe. Fuyu, DWARF Fuyu and Ichikikijiro are Non-Astringent Persimmon varieties, and can be eaten in either way. The fruit is very durable, and can have a shelf-life of up to 6 weeks, before becoming soft. They can be refrigerated to extend the season.
The Fuyu Persimmon is commonly marketed with the name Fuji fruit. It is a large squat, square fruit, weighing on average 400g. When ripe, the fruit skin is smooth, really bright orange to red, shiny, and thin. It is mostly Seedless. Fuyu are a Non-Astringent Persimmon variety. The flavour is always sweet, and the texture is crunchy when eaten uncoloured, soft texture when fully ripe. The stem is indented at the top of the fruit and around it are the 4 flat flower petals, sepals, which slowly brown off. Fuyu Persimmon are a late-season fruit, ripening in Autumn.
