Fruit description: The Grafted Haitian Star Apple fruit is round, smooth skinned, and glossy, from 5 to 8cm wide. It turns from green to dark purple when ripe. Cut the fruit in half to reveal a pointed star shape around the seeds, this star gives the fruit its name. The flesh is white with purple colouring, with 1 or 2 small shiny brown seeds. It tastes sweet like succulent jelly. The skin is 4mm thick, and is not eaten as it has an astringent latex, which is unpleasant on your mouth.
Flowers: Grafted Haitian Star Apple flowers are white and very small, occurring in bunches along all leafy branches in late-summer and autumn.
Growing conditions: The Grafted Haitian Star Apple will fruit in one year, and is a beautiful bushy tree that gives excellent shade. It grows rapidly to 6 metres in height. It has glossy dark green long leaves which are shiny, golden and felt-like on the underside. In a breeze the trees leaves look like golden felt. The Grafted Haitian Star Apple cannot tolerate heavy frost. Plant Grafted Haitian Star Apple trees in a warm sunny position, in rich, moist soil. The tree needs water during the growing season and benefits from plenty of mulch around it.
Uses: Grafted Haitian Star Apple fruit is best eaten fresh, or in a fruit salad.
