Plant origin: Tangelo is a cross between a mandarin and a grapefruit.
Fruit description: Tangelo Minneola fruit are bright, dark orange in colour, with a smooth slightly pocked skin. Tangelo Minneola fruit has a distinct small nipple shape on the top, the fruit are 9cm wide. The flesh is sweet and very juicy with a nice citrus aroma, and a hint of grapefruit flavour. Tangelo Minneola fruit are easy to peel and there are only a few seeds.
Flowers: Tangelo flowers are 2cm in diameter, fragrant, waxy, white, with 4 petals in a star shape. They are produced in Spring
Growing conditions: The Tangelo tree is evergreen, with glossy dark green leaves and grows to about 2.5 metres high. It can be grown in a pot. Tangelo trees like full sun and require rich, well-drained soil and can tolerate frosts. Plenty of water is required for big juicy fruit and plant health. Pruning is not required. Fertilise the tree in Winter and in late Summer with loves chicken manure or citrus fertiliser. Mulch around the tree but do not let it touch the stem or it can cause rot.
Uses: Tangelo fruit can be eaten fresh, or used to make a fantastic refreshing sweet citrus juice. It can be added to fruit salads, also makes delicious marmalade or candied peel. Tangelo fruit can be used for Indian or Asian pickles and preserves. Use the juice or grated rind the same as oranges. Tangelos are rich in vitamin C and dietary fibre.

Harvest time Tangelo fruit are ready to pick when they are bright and dark orange, and heavy usually in spring. They will not ripen after picking but keep well at room temperature or in the fridge.
